Shesterkin Sets Ambitious Goals for Rangers Season

Igor Shesterkin reflected on last season’s disappointment, noting how the Rangers missed the playoffs for the first time in four years. He expressed concerns that something had gone awry within the team. However, when it comes to this season, his expectations are clear.

“Stanley Cup,” he stated without hesitation.

Last season was challenging for him, as he faced a dip in performance. Shesterkin recorded an average of 2.86 goals against, which, honestly, wasn’t great, and a save percentage of .905, marking the lowest since he joined the team in 2019-20. He did, at least, get a fair amount of play, making 61 starts with a record of 27 wins, 29 losses, and 5 overtime losses.

“For any professional athlete, striving for the highest level is essential,” he added. “That should be everyone’s goal.”

This offseason, he kept much of his training routine similar but put more emphasis on building strength.

Interestingly, the defensive lineup has shifted significantly compared to his first five seasons. One new teammate, Vladislav Gavrikov, is someone Shesterkin knows from their time with the Russian national team back in the day.

In other team news, Artemi Panarin dealt with a lower body injury, which kept him from finishing a training camp session recently. Coach Mike Sullivan mentioned that while Panarin’s situation is worth monitoring, it’s largely precautionary at this early stage of camp.

Additionally, MSG announced Dave Starman will join Alex Faust as the color analyst for Rangers Radio Broadcast this season.

In coaching updates, David Quinn will oversee the power play and defense duties while Joe Sacco will manage the penalty kills. Notably, Quinn has prior experience with Sullivan in similar roles.
