Trump Administration Pushes for Change in Chicago Schools
The Trump administration is urging Chicago public schools to eliminate the “Black Student Success Plan” and guidelines that enable transgender students to participate in sports and use bathrooms corresponding to their gender identity.
Linda McMahon, the Education Director, announced via X that the Department’s Office of Civil Rights (OCR) has sent a letter indicating that the district is violating anti-discrimination laws through its exclusive focus on the “Black Student Success Plan.”
This plan is part of the Magnet School Assistance Program, which last year received a $15 million grant that could now be at risk. The program is expected to encourage interaction among students of varied backgrounds but is legally bound to ensure that grants are not approved if there is any form of discrimination based on race, gender, or other factors.
Additionally, the administration has withdrawn support for the guidelines that assist transgender and gender nonconforming students in Chicago, labeling them as “discriminatory.” Officials have ordered the schools to adopt definitions of “male” and “female” based on biological criteria to align with federal laws.
Concerns have been raised regarding the implications for female students who might have to compete against their male peers. The letter from McMahon emphasized that compliance with these directives is mandatory, stating that “I will not certify CPS grants… if they are not in accordance with the law.”
CPS is now expected to adhere to a series of requests set forth by the Trump administration regarding grant certification.
In a broader context, the Department of Education has reached out to other magnet schools, including those in New York City and Fairfax, urging compliance with federal regulations.
“We cannot compromise on civil rights protections,” McMahon said in her post. The letter follows a recent investigation by the OCR concerning policies related to transgender students at Chicago Public Schools.
An official from CPS, however, has refrained from commenting on the ongoing investigation.
