Country Music’s Brett James Dies in Plane Crash
Brett James, the talented songwriter behind Carrie Underwood’s hit “Yes, Take the Wheel,” tragically passed away on Thursday in a plane crash in North Carolina, at the age of 57.
The plane, owned by James, had two other passengers on board who were also pronounced dead at the scene. Later reports identified them as his wife, Melody Carole Wilson, and his stepdaughter, Meryl Maxwell Wilson.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the aircraft was registered under James’ legal name, Brett James Cornelius, and he appeared to be the pilot at the time of the crash.
“A Cirrus SR22T crashed in a field in Franklin around 3 PM on September 18. There were three people on board,” the FAA stated.
Just months prior to this heartbreaking incident, James had shared a joyful moment with his family. On June 16, he posted a cheerful picture on Instagram celebrating Father’s Day.
He wrote, “So this amazing Father’s Day!!” accompanied by a happy family photo.
A few days earlier, he had shared another post featuring a selfie with his wife on a beach, captioning it, “It was so much fun with my love in the Bahamas.”
Sadly, this crash occurred just days after Meryl celebrated her 28th birthday. Melody had posted a heartfelt tribute to her daughter on social media, consisting of sentimental pictures and a loving message: “Happy birthday my love!! Are you blessed to be your mother!”
In a touching message, she expressed how humbled she felt having Meryl in her life.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident.
James’ career was remarkable; he was one of Nashville’s beloved songwriters, working on over 500 songs for artists like Faith Hill, Kelly Clarkson, and Luke Bryan, to name a few.
His biggest hit was, of course, “Yes, Take the Wheel,” which gained considerable acclaim. The music community is mourning the loss of this talented individual.
Underwood shared an emotional tribute, saying that the impact of his loss on family, friends, and the music community is “immeasurable.” She reflected, “Brett’s death leaves a hole in us all. It’s a reminder that life is fleeting; we must cherish every day.”
Additionally, James co-wrote hits for various artists, including Martina McBride and Kenny Chesney, and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2020.
The investigation into this tragic incident is ongoing, and more details will likely emerge in time.
