Lawmakers Shift Stance on Charlie Kirk

In a surprising turn of events, lawmakers have retracted their earlier support for Charlie Kirk just hours after voting to honor him.

Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-N.J.) was among the 95 Democrats who voted in favor of a House resolution celebrating Kirk’s “life and heritage” on Friday. This vote followed his recent presence at an event just over a week after he was reportedly assassinated by a young man connected to someone who identified as transgender.

Support for Kirk’s resolution came from both sides of the aisle, culminating in a total of 310 votes in favor and 58 against. Interestingly, while Sherrill supported the resolution, her subsequent remarks reflected a deepening confusion about her earlier decision.

On her X account, she emphasized that while she values free speech, she finds Kirk’s views troubling. “I take my oath to the Constitution seriously. I believe in freedom of speech, but if it was only meant to protect views we agree with, the First Amendment wouldn’t be necessary,” Sherrill noted. “It’s meant to safeguard voices like Kirk’s, even those I think are… well, kind of deceitful.”

Democrats in New Jersey later criticized Kirk, claiming he advocates for the restriction of women’s and Black people’s rights. Sherrill further elaborated, saying, “Charlie Kirk supports a Christian nationalist government and champions the rollback of rights. This conflicts with my values.” Still, she affirmed that the Constitution protects even those views she opposes vehemently.

Sherrill also expressed frustration with President Trump, accusing him of perpetuating “hypocrisy at every turn” and igniting a “witch hunt” reminiscent of McCarthyism, stifling free speech for opponents of Kirk’s views.

Addressing Kirk’s assassination, she described it as “terrifying,” urging a collective stance against political violence.

“During these times, I will keep condemning political violence, racism, attacks on women’s rights, and hypocrisy from Trump and his allies,” she concluded.

Meanwhile, Sherrill is gearing up for her gubernatorial run in New Jersey against Republican challenger Jack Ciattarelli.

Ciattarelli responded to Sherrill’s remarks, suggesting her “hypocrisy knows no bounds.” He labeled her comments about Kirk as “unforgivable,” asserting she lacks the qualifications for public office.

Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) also weighed in, stating in response to Sherrill’s comments, “You can’t say that kind of stuff, especially when it’s untrue.”
