On Friday, protests against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility escalated into chaos, with tear gas clouds filling the air and pepper balls and rubber bullets being used at the entrance.
Among the demonstrators, Kat Abugazare, a Democratic Congressional candidate, ended up on the ground after law enforcement pushed her back as she tried to block a federal vehicle exiting the facility.
The protest occurred at the Broadview ICE facility, located roughly 12 miles west of downtown Chicago. As the gates opened and a white SUV was about to leave, tensions flared dramatically with federal agents in tactical gear intervening.
Estimates suggest around 100 protesters were present, including Evanston, Illinois Mayor Daniel Biss, who was part of the crowd.
Meanwhile, videos surfaced showing an individual dressed as an agent—equipped with Captain America’s shield—retaliating with tear gas against the crowd.
Reports indicated at least three arrests took place during the unrest, with some tires on federal vehicles also slashed.
As the gates were closed to demonstrators, protesters voiced their frustration, one shouting, “Was it worth paying off your student loan?” while another echoed, “I hope your kids are crying, you’re an asshole.”
Another individual called out, “Shit, fuck Nazi stab wounds,” and yet another yelled, “I’ll go to your Hitler.”
As the confrontation concluded and agents retreated behind a locked gate, the air was filled with loud, aggressive exclamations from the protesters.
According to reports, immigration officials arrested nearly 550 individuals as part of the Trump administration’s enforcement operation, dubbed “Operation Midway Blitz,” which initiated two weeks ago.
A spokesperson for CBS News mentioned, “All arrests demonstrate the commitment of DHS and its enforcement agencies to uphold the laws of our nation. We won’t be deterred by sanctuary politicians or violent mobs.”
