Jets urgently require Tyrod Taylor to prevent another wasted season.

TAMPA, Fla. — The Jets turn to their backup quarterback after just three weeks

Tyrod Taylor is set to start for the Jets against the Buccaneers on Sunday, stepping in for Justin Fields, who is out due to a concussion sustained in last week’s loss.

Historically, the Jets have struggled when turning to their backup quarterbacks, like in 2023 when Aaron Rodgers was injured early on, or in 2019 with Sam Darnold’s early-season issues. But this time, there’s a sense that Taylor, now 36, could provide some stability.

“He’s been in this league long enough, so there’s not much he hasn’t faced before,” said coach Aaron Glenn. “I trust him. He’s a diligent player, and he has the experience that matters.”

This won’t be an easy game for Taylor. He’s tasked with leading the Jets to their first win of the season and avoiding an 0-3 start.

Meanwhile, the Buccaneers are coming off two dramatic wins, standing strong at 2-0. Coach Todd Bowles, a former colleague of Glenn, and quarterback Baker Mayfield have built a solid foundation in Tampa.

After a disheartening 30-10 loss to the Bills, where it seemed like nothing clicked for the Jets, the team is hungry for a win. “I have a lot of faith in everyone in this locker room,” Taylor expressed. “Sure, we’re up against a strong team, but I truly believe we can get it done together.”

This will mark Taylor’s first start since wrapping up the 2023 season with the Giants, and he has already thrown four touchdown passes without any interceptions since joining the Jets.

His presence in the locker room has been well-received, and he’s been vocal about his confidence in the team. “I believe in myself, but knowing that everyone else feels the same way is crucial,” Taylor added. “No one here is lacking confidence; we all support one another.”
