Chia seeds are everywhere these days. They’ve become quite the trend among health enthusiasts and wellness advocates, praised for their impressive nutritional benefits. But, interestingly enough, these tiny seeds can also pose health risks if not consumed properly.

Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist from California with training from Harvard and Stanford, shares some essential advice about eating chia seeds safely. In a video posted online, he highlights a major concern: if you eat dry chia seeds without soaking them first, you could end up in an unpleasant situation.

What are Chia Seeds?

These miniature seeds, either black or white, come from the Salvia hispanica plant, which hails from Central America. Historically, they’ve been utilized by the Aztec and Mayan civilizations, appreciated for their medicinal and cosmetic benefits.

Nutritional Profile of Chia Seeds

Chia seeds boast a rich nutritional profile. They’re loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, dietary fiber, proteins, vitamins, and various minerals, as well as polyphenols and antioxidants. A mere two tablespoons of chia seeds can provide:

  • Calories: 138
  • Protein: 4.7 grams
  • Fat: 8.7 grams (including 5 grams of omega-3s)
  • Carbohydrates: 12.3 grams (10.6 grams of fiber)
  • Calcium: 18% of the Daily Value (DV)
  • Magnesium: 23% of the DV
  • Phosphorus: 27% of the DV
  • Vitamin B1 (thiamine): 15% of the DV
  • Vitamin B3 (niacin): 16% of the DV

Health Risks Associated with Chia Seeds

While chia seeds can be beneficial for gut and heart health, they can also be dangerous if consumed inappropriately. Dr. Sethi warns that improper consumption could lead to serious complications. Eating dry chia seeds followed by drinking water can result in the seeds swelling and causing blockages in the esophagus. This, although rare, has necessitated hospital visits for some individuals, particularly those with existing swallowing difficulties.

Chia seeds can absorb up to 27 times their weight in water. Hence, if they aren’t soaked properly, the risks of ending up in an emergency room could be significant. The doctor emphasizes the importance of soaking them beforehand.

Proper Way to Consume Chia Seeds

The safest method to enjoy chia seeds? Soak them first. Dr. Sethi suggests letting them soak in water for at least 30 minutes or even overnight. This will allow them to develop a gel-like texture, which not only aids digestion but also makes them much safer to consume. It’s a good idea to start with just one teaspoon and gradually increase the amount.
