A seventh grader in Michigan showed remarkable bravery when he disarmed a classmate armed with a gun at school, yet, according to his mother, he faced expulsion because he didn’t notify his teacher right away.
Reports indicate that Sakir, a student at Dwy Lich School of the Arts, acted to protect his fellow classmates when he discovered the weapon. His quick thinking possibly averted what could have been a devastating incident.
“Sakir didn’t think about running away; his instinct was to protect his friends,” a GoFundMe page supporting him and his family stated. “This likely prevented a tragic event.”
Meanwhile, the classmate who brought the gun was charged with possession and suspended from attending junior high school.
“They expelled him for the entire year,” said Sakir’s mother, Savitra McCrukin, in a statement to a local outlet.
The incident, which took place in May, left Sakir reluctant to speak up immediately, fearing repercussions. Details surrounding his punishment remain vague.
“He was hesitant to get involved or reveal who brought the firearm,” McCrukin explained, noting her son’s understanding of the seriousness of bringing guns to school.
Sakir has experience with firearms from hunting and felt confident in his ability to handle it safely.
Known for his academic achievements, Sakir is described as an “A/B student” and participates in sports at his public magnet school.
Frustrated with the school district, his mother expressed concerns that her son is being set up to fail. “I’ve done everything I can to shield him from this,” she said.
Currently, Sakir is enrolled in an online education program while waiting for a resolution about his future in school.
“The online schools respect the district’s decision but haven’t offered other options,” McCrukin noted.
“He’s a bright kid just wanting to be a child,” she shared, adding that she feels more devastated by the situation than Sakir does.
At a recent school board meeting, McCrukin sought answers but received no response to her pleas. “What are we supposed to do? He’s just 11 and has never been in trouble before,” she questioned the board.
Support from the community has surfaced as many rally behind McClurkin following what they view as an unfair decision.
“Instead of being celebrated as a hero, Sakir is being treated like a criminal and expelled from school,” the GoFundMe page asserts, highlighting the dramatic shift in his situation.
The sudden removal from school has put additional strain on Sakir’s mother, who now faces the burden of homeschooling him while reducing her work hours, which creates a financial strain on their family.
“Sakir’s actions came from a place of courage and care for his classmates,” the fundraiser states, encouraging the community to reciprocate that support.
The school district plans to evaluate the situation after the academic year concludes regarding Sakir’s potential return, but it’s still unclear if the student who brought the weapon faces consequences.
