Detention Operations in Alabama Raise Concerns

Recently, over 20 individuals have been detained in Alabama, marking what seems to be one of the first collaborative “checkpoint” operations involving the Department of Homeland Security and state police. This operation has drawn attention for its implications and execution.

Governor Kay Ivey of Alabama confirmed her directive to law enforcement to collaborate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to address criminal activities. She highlighted the agency’s recent successes in Russellville, where numerous arrests were made.

Alea, the state agency, reported that troopers set up driver license checkpoints in Franklin and Colbert counties, with ICE agents accompanying them in these enforcement efforts.

State’s Approach to Immigration Enforcement

Census data indicates that a significant portion of the local population identifies as Hispanic. Furthermore, Alea emphasized that ongoing collaboration with ICE would yield more immigration-related statistics in the future.

Governor Ivey stated, “Statewide, driver license checkpoints have been crucial in intercepting criminal activities, and now with ICE involved, we aim to enhance these efforts.” She also conveyed a firm stance on illegal immigration, asserting that those who enter the state unlawfully will not be tolerated, and affirming her commitment to using all available measures to ensure public safety.

Senator Tommy Tuberville, sharing his views, remarked that the large number of votes received by President Trump signaled a clear call for stricter deportation policies, wishing for other states to emulate Alabama’s method of working closely with federal law enforcement.

Senator Nathaniel Ledbetter expressed support for both Ivey and Alea, lamenting that some leaders seem more inclined to protect criminals than to prioritize the safety of honest citizens. He underscored the importance of the state-federal partnership to ensure effective law enforcement going forward.

Community Reactions to Recent Operations

While some officials champion this initiative, community members have voiced their concerns. For instance, local immigration attorney Brett Pounasy noted that many neighborhoods are partnering with ICE for these checkpoints, often termed “roadblocks.” Meanwhile, community organizer Evelyn Selvin criticized the collaboration, alleging that racial profiling incidents have occurred in her area, leading to unjust detentions.

In Baldwin County, ICE carried out similar enforcement activities earlier in the summer, resulting in multiple arrests in popular beach destinations. Reports indicate that, in light of these operations, advocates for immigrants have taken steps to highlight the dangers faced by specific individuals, even urging them to write emergency contact numbers on their bodies.
