Sean Cassidy Reflects on His Complicated Relationship with His Late Father

Sean Cassidy is opening up about his father, Jack Cassidy, who was a well-known actor that passed away in 1976 at the age of 49.

In a recent interview, the 66-year-old actor and singer described Jack as a complex figure. “He basically created this public persona with an accent that doesn’t really belong to any specific place,” he said.

Sean recalled early memories of Jack, especially his distinctive talking style when he rose to fame and started appearing on various talk shows. “Patrick, Ryan, and I used to wonder, ‘What’s up with this guy?’ It felt so artificial, but he wasn’t being fake, I think he was just… I don’t know if he understood who he really was,” Sean reflected.

Sean’s candid talk didn’t stop there; he labeled Jack as “not a good father.” He clarified, “I don’t mean to disrespect him. It’s just how it was. Still, I wouldn’t trade him for anything. I learned a lot from him.”

Jack, who shared Sean with actress Shirley Jones, apparently wasn’t involved much in Sean’s upbringing. “I didn’t have a dad at my little league games or going camping with me. That was all my mother,” Sean shared. He noted how his mother, who worked on numerous projects, seemed to want to be closer to home, particularly during her time on ‘The Partridge Family.’

Reflecting on his parents, Sean remarked on how their public personas often didn’t reflect their true selves. “Public perception was very different from reality,” he noted. He mentioned that, as a kid, family moments felt more like photo opportunities orchestrated by professional photographers than genuine experiences. “Most of the pictures I have were taken for magazines, not just our family hanging out,” he said.

Sean also reminisced about the love and admiration people had for his parents, saying, “Everyone adored my mother, and people were fascinated by my dad. It was exciting but also, I think, kind of overwhelming.”

Jack Cassidy also had another son, David Cassidy, an actor and musician who unfortunately passed away in 2017 due to organ failure after battling alcoholism. David was 67 at the time.
