UK, Canada, Australia acknowledge Palestinian state for a two-state resolution

Countries Recognize Palestinian State Despite Israeli Opposition

This past Sunday, the UK, Canada, and Australia declared their recognition of a Palestinian state, which they hope will pave the way for peace with Israel, even as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu opposed the move.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized that the intention behind this decision is to rejuvenate the prospect of peace between Palestinians and Israelis. He noted that the UK acknowledged Israel as a Jewish homeland over 75 years ago and mentioned the complexity that Hamas, responsible for a deadly attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, adds to this situation. He argued that for Hamas, their actions are not viewed as negotiation tools but rather as attacks, resulting in civilian deaths and the kidnapping of numerous individuals.

Experts have pointed out that acknowledging the Palestinian state at this time could complicate future efforts aimed at peace.

Starmer referred to Hamas as a “brutal terrorist organization,” stating that in the context of a Palestinian state, there would be “no future, no government, no role, no security.”

In Canada, Prime Minister Mark Carney also recognized the Palestinian state, expressing on social media that the country is ready to form “partnerships to foster a peaceful future for both Palestinian and Israeli states.”

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, alongside Senate government leader Penny Wong, issued a statement insisting that Hamas “has no role in Palestine.” They declared that their recognition of Palestine aligns with a broader international push to advance the two-state solution, starting with achieving a ceasefire in Gaza and addressing the situation of hostages taken on October 7, 2023.

Meanwhile, criticism has emerged from families of hostages directed toward Britain and France for their recognition of Palestine.

Currently, more than 145 countries in Europe have recognized Palestine, including over a dozen European nations. However, Netanyahu’s government has firmly rejected the two-state solution, claiming it’s incompatible with the current geopolitical dynamics. He asserted that the establishment of a Palestinian state in the region west of the Jordan River “won’t happen.” Netanyahu plans to outline Israel’s official stance following his upcoming trip to the US.

During a recent visit to the UK, former President Trump expressed discontent with the decisions made by the UK, Canada, and Australia.

It’s important to note that there are still 48 hostages in Gaza, and reports indicate that less than half are alive. On October 7, 2023, Hamas-led militants infiltrated southern Israel, resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths, predominantly civilians, alongside the abduction of 251 individuals.
