Formula One After Summer Break: McLaren and Verstappen in Focus
As Formula One gears up to resume after the summer break, two key topics are dominating the conversation, particularly surrounding McLaren. The big question is—when will McLaren secure its second constructor championship title?
However, the champagne remains on ice, largely due to Max Verstappen, who is now looking towards his own title aspirations following a stellar performance in Baku.
Verstappen, having claimed pole position in Saturday’s dramatic qualifying, led wire-to-wire on Sunday to win the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. This marked his second victory of the season. With this win, he moved to second place in the Drivers Championship, narrowing the gap to Norris (44 points) while Piastri, the current leader, crashed on the opening lap. Norris, unfortunately, couldn’t take advantage of this and finished in seventh place.
“Every race has its own story, but I think this weekend was incredible for us,” Verstappen shared trackside after his victory. “Sure, the previous weekend was great too. Winning here again feels fantastic. The car was really performing well, and we had clean air during the race, allowing us to manage our tires easily. Conditions were good, given it wasn’t particularly windy.”
When the season recommenced in late August, Norris had already won three of his last four Grand Prix, including the Hungarian Grand Prix, putting him in just a nine-point deficit against Piastri, while Verstappen was a distant 97 points behind the leader.
Yet, Verstappen has since made a comeback. After finishing second in the Belgian Grand Prix, where Piastri retired due to a mechanical failure, Verstappen won both the Italian Grand Prix and the recent race in Azerbaijan. These victories have significantly changed the title race landscape, bringing the Red Bull driver back into contention.
With seven race weekends left, including a trio of Formula 1 sprint races, Verstappen certainly has boosted his chances of securing a fifth driver title.
That said, both mathematics and history don’t seem to favor him, as acknowledged by the legends from Sunday’s race.
At this point last season, Verstappen held a 59-point lead over Norris in the drivers’ championship. Norris notably closed that gap to just 52 points after dominating the Singapore Grand Prix.
However, that was the closest anyone came to challenging Verstappen last year, as he eventually clinched his fourth driver championship in Las Vegas, finishing with a 63-point lead.
While Verstappen remains mathematically in the race, it was noted that, even if he were to win all the remaining Grand Prix and sprint races, Piastri finishing second in each would secure him a first championship title.
When asked if his recent victories offered a hint of hope for the title, Verstappen referenced the uphill challenge ahead.
“I don’t rely purely on hope. Seven rounds left means there’s a lot at stake—69 points is substantial, so I’m not dwelling on it,” he stated. “I focus on each race individually, trying to gather as many points as possible. We’ll see after Abu Dhabi.”
Beyond the numbers, history unfolds in other ways. Following Monza and the Baku City Circuit, Singapore is the next stop— a place where Verstappen has never triumphed, with his best finish being second place when Norris took the win last year.
He pointed to this history with a hint of caution on Sunday.
“It’s tough to predict our performance, but the last two weekends have been exceptional for us. Singapore will require a different kind of strategy with its high downforce, so we’ll see what we can achieve there,” Verstappen remarked trackside, noting the challenges ahead.
Interestingly, while he hasn’t secured a win yet in Singapore, Red Bull indeed has in the past. “It’s different terrain. The challenges vary significantly,” Verstappen added, indicating a readiness for whatever lies ahead.
This thrilling couple of weeks has transformed Verstappen into a competitive hunter in the title race, a shift from his earlier position. What if his impressive form continues through Singapore? Could he secure his first victory there?
