A’ja Wilson Makes WNBA History with Fourth MVP Award

A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces has been named the WNBA MVP once again, setting a remarkable record with her fourth win. This achievement marks her as the first player in WNBA history to earn the MVP award four times, adding yet another accolade to her outstanding career.

This season, Wilson outperformed Minnesota Lynx’s Naphesa Collier to secure the title, collecting 51 first-place votes and a total of 657 points. Collier finished with 534 points and also garnered first-place votes but fell short in the overall tally.

In the final ranking, Phoenix Mercury’s Alyssa Thomas placed third with 391 points, followed by Arisha Grey from the Atlanta Dream in fourth with 180 points, and Kelsey Mitchell of the Indiana Fever rounding out the top five with 93 points.

Wilson’s journey to this historic moment began when she claimed her first MVP title in 2020, followed by another in 2022. Remarkably, she now joins a select group of elite players, including Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie, and Lauren Jackson, who have also claimed multiple MVP awards.

At just 29 years old, Wilson has displayed exceptional talent and consistency since entering the league. This season, she topped the league with an average of 23.4 points per game, along with impressive stats of 10.2 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. Notably, she also earned the title of Co-Defensive Player of the Year, sharing the honor with Lynx star Alana Smith.

Aces head coach Becky Hammon expressed her confidence in Wilson’s potential, saying, “By the time that’s all said and done, she’ll be the greatest ever.” It’s hard not to agree with that sentiment, especially considering how the league continues to evolve while she keeps elevating her game.

With her fourth MVP award under her belt, Wilson is now focused on capturing another WNBA championship, with playoff semi-finals starting this Sunday. All eyes will be on her and the Aces as they aim to further build on their success.
