Mark Ruffalo Compares U.S. Government to the Taliban
Actor Mark Ruffalo drew parallels between the U.S. government under President Donald Trump and the Taliban during a recent discussion about Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension from ABC. The late-night host was suspended indefinitely, and Ruffalo spoke about the “cloudy” circumstances surrounding the situation, suggesting it exemplifies a “canceled culture” enforced by the government.
Ruffalo described the administration as a “fascist regime,” expressing concerns about living under such a system. He warned that the state is gradually limiting free speech, saying, “It’s the US government that’s currently restraining freedom of speech.” He emphasized that this isn’t about social media or personal disputes, but something much larger.
“This cancellation is for the US government to come and take your voice away from you,” he stated, calling for unity against what he perceives as authoritarianism that threatens individual liberties. He elaborated that these constraints could force people to lead smaller and more secretive lives.
The suspension of Kimmel’s show came after accusations from some hosts that conservatives were trying to manipulate the narrative surrounding a tragedy involving Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk. Kimmel himself remarked that certain groups have sunk to new lows in trying to spin this tragic incident for political gain.
Ruffalo also linked the decline in Disney stocks to Kimmel’s suspension. He implied that, should the show be permanently canceled, the company’s financial situation might worsen. “Disney doesn’t want to be what destroyed America,” he remarked.
He responded to Stephen Colbert’s earlier remarks at the Emmys following his own show’s cancellation, sharing his disbelief at the continuous shocking developments in the media landscape. “Is this our reality? Is this America?” he reflected, highlighting the confusing nature of current events and the impact they have on public discourse.
