Colts Coach Comments on Quarterback Performance

During a recent press conference, Colts head coach Shane Steichen had little to say about Daniel Jones, the former Giants quarterback, who seems to have found his footing with the Colts this season.

After the Colts secured a 41-20 victory over the Titans, Steichen elaborated on Jones’ performance. “You’ve got a guy who’s back there, drawing up plays daily, analyzing them, and really understanding what we’re trying to achieve offensively. Having someone who can consistently find the right plays is invaluable. It’s not easy, you know—this position is one of the toughest in sports, and he’s really grasping it,” he stated.

Jones had a solid game, completing 18 of 25 passes for 228 yards with one touchdown, plus 27 rushing yards. Overall, in three games this season, he’s completed 71.6% of his passes, generating 816 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. His passer rating also stood impressively at 111.7, ranking third in the NFL.

“He’s reading the game well,” Steichen noted. “We’re able to get into the right plays and he’s delivering the ball accurately. He’s in a good rhythm.” Remarkably, the Colts have only punted once in three games this season, a feat that hasn’t been seen since at least 1940.

Jones expressed high expectations from his team. “Every time we’re out there, we expect to make progress and score,” he said after the win.

At 28, Jones signed a one-year, $14 million deal with the Colts this offseason, earning the starting position over Anthony Richardson. This comes after a challenging previous season with the Giants, where he was benched, ultimately falling to fourth on the depth chart due to injury concerns. After that, he spent the remainder of his last season with the Vikings but didn’t see any game time.

Interestingly, the Giants have started their season 0-3, contrasting sharply with the Colts’ early success. It’s a remarkable turnaround for Jones, showcasing his potential to thrive in a new environment.
