Chipper Jones Honors Bobby Cox After His Passing

Chipper Jones has publicly mourned the loss of his former manager Bobby Cox, who died on Friday at the age of 84.

Late Saturday, the Hall of Fame third baseman took to X to share his condolences, highlighting the profound impact Cox had on him and many others in Braves Country. “I can’t just sit back during this time of sadness. It’s tough to articulate what Bobby Cox meant to me and to so many in Atlanta,” Jones expressed.

Cox, a Hall of Famer, managed the Braves for an impressive 29 seasons, achieving 15 division titles, five pennants, and one World Series championship over his tenure. Jones reminisced, “He was more than just a coach; he was a true leader and a father figure for many of us with the Braves.” He continued, “Today’s a hard day for me, especially since I’m here watching my sons play in a championship game on the very day we lost him. I feel compelled to yell out the same supportive phrases he did from the dugout: ‘Come on, boy! You got this!’”

Beyond his role with the Braves, Cox also managed the Blue Jays and held a general manager position with Atlanta. He was a key figure in many players’ careers, including Jones, who debuted in Atlanta under Cox in 1993 and played alongside him until Cox’s retirement in 2010. It’s fascinating how deep their bond ran; Jones reflected, “Even while we’ll miss him greatly, his influence is embedded in the success of this franchise over the last 35 years. The Braves will carry on strong, thanks to him having built this team and shaping its future.”

Jones shared his belief that Cox’s spirit was present during his sons’ games this weekend, adding, “Both of my boys won. I have no doubt Bobby had a hand in that!”
