Quarterback Controversy Looms for Giants
After the Giants’ loss to the Chiefs, coach Brian Daboll stopped short of confirming a quarterback change, but he didn’t dismiss the idea of switching Russell Wilson for rookie Jackson Dart in their upcoming game against the Chargers.
“We’re evaluating everything right now,” Daboll mentioned during a Monday Zoom call. “We’re making all necessary decisions in the coming days.”
It’s worth noting that Daboll had previously backed Wilson just a day after their loss to the Eagles, which makes his current comments quite intriguing.
Fans at MetLife Stadium were vocal during the game, chanting “We Want Dart” as Wilson struggled. Dart did get involved briefly in three running plays but hasn’t thrown a pass yet in his short NFL career, which has seen the Giants lose every game so far.
In the previous week, Wilson had a standout performance against the Cowboys, throwing for a career-high 450 yards. However, against the Chiefs, he faced significant pressure and criticism for a lackluster showing, including being booed as he left the field after Dart took a few snaps.
“There are ups and downs, and things can get tough,” Wilson reflected post-game. “You need to maintain self-confidence and have thick skin.” He acknowledged past successes while expressing belief in the team’s abilities.
The Giants traded up in this year’s draft to select Dart as the 25th overall pick out of Ole Miss, indicating some level of commitment to the young quarterback.
After the game, Dart remarked that he wasn’t aware of the crowd’s chant during the match. “I just want to be on the field and help the team however I can,” he said. “It’s challenging to get everyone synchronized on offense.”
