Harris Responds to Trump Campaign Ads on Trans Surgical Support
Former Vice President Kamala Harris dismissed recent Trump campaign ads that criticized her support for government-funded transgender surgeries for undocumented immigrants and prisoners.
As the 2024 campaign heats up, Trump’s team leveraged Harris’ advocacy for taxpayer-funded transgender surgery in an ad that proclaimed, “Kamala for them/them, President Trump for you.”
Critics have suggested that this advertisement significantly harmed her campaign’s prospects.
Reflecting on this in her upcoming memoir, “107 Days,” Harris attributed her perspective to the outdated views of a middle-aged man disconnected from battleground states.
Yet, many Californians expressed concern that she wasn’t doing enough to defend trans rights, with Harris stating that she doesn’t regret following her protective instincts. Highlights from her memoir have been previewed by various outlets.
“I feel a strong connection to this community,” Harris emphasized. “I wasn’t going to betray trans people; that goes against who I am.”
She acknowledged, however, that she could have responded better to Trump’s attacks.
“I regret not being more strategic in countering those messages,” Harris admitted.
“Ultimately, the key message should be that there’s no divide between ‘them/they’ and ‘you.’ The focus should be on ‘us’—our community,” she added.
The Trump campaign’s messages brought to light earlier statements from Harris, where she had indicated support for guaranteed transgender surgery as part of her healthcare policy.
In those discussions, Harris claimed that if elected president, she would ensure that transgender and non-binary individuals—particularly those in prisons or detention centers—would access all necessary surgical care.
She reaffirmed this position in an interview with the National Transgender Equality Action Fund.
Throughout the 2024 election cycle, Republican strategists have sought to capitalize on the more liberal stances Harris took during her short-lived 2020 campaign.
While she expressed a commitment to protecting the transgender community, Harris also recognized growing concerns regarding fairness in women’s sports when it comes to transgender athletes.
In her memoir, she stated, “I understand the worries voiced by parents and athletes about biological factors like muscle mass and the advantages they can offer in competitive sports, especially in contact sports.”
“I believe we can navigate this with both good intentions and common sense, without disparaging our youth,” she concluded.
As the 2024 election looms, the cultural debates surrounding such issues remain a significant focus, with Democrats actively seeking ways to address transgender topics.
Earlier in the year, California Governor Gavin Newsom admitted that allowing transgender women—who are biologically male—to compete against biological women in sports is “deeply unfair.”
Harris’ memoir detailing her brief presidential campaign is set to be released soon, touching on her experience in the turbulent political landscape, including a look at her relationship with President Biden and the broader Democratic field.
