Homeland Security Responds to New York Magazine’s Criticism
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has addressed a story from New York Magazine. It’s not Secretary Christie Noem directly involved, but rather Corey Lewandowski, who’s described as a key figure in the agency.
DHS criticized the article, branding it as “anonymous gossip” and lacking credibility. Deputy Chief Tricia McLaughlin conveyed her discontent, stating, “This hit piece feels like an emotional outburst from a teenager, merely asking ChatGPT for a misogynistic rant. It’s not just careless; it’s a sensationalist approach that treats gossip as truth while overlooking our comprehensive rebuttals.”
McLaughlin continued, suggesting that New York Magazine has sunk to a new low in reporting, even saying it “feeds the public something less palatable than dog food.”
Reactions to Comments on Christie Noem
Amidst the scrutiny, Governor Gavin Newsom faced backlash for his remarks related to Noem following a recent incident involving Charlie Kirk.
Lewandowski once served as President Donald Trump’s campaign manager during the 2016 Republican primaries and remains a senior advisor to the DHS. McLaughlin clarified that all significant decisions fall under Secretary Noem’s jurisdiction, highlighting that Lewandowski’s role is strictly advisory.
Noem, appointed by Trump in late 2024, previously governed South Dakota and is speculated to be a vice presidential candidate for Trump’s upcoming campaign.
DHS’s Notable Operations
A DHS source revealed that Noem has faced threats from various groups, including terrorist organizations. The agency is actively targeting illegal immigration and working to deport individuals in the United States.
Reports suggest that despite these dangers, Noem resides in Coast Guard housing in Washington, DC.
New York Magazine has pointed to the rising deportation rates as characteristics of a “Trump police state,” claiming that DHS endangers the constitutional rights of citizens and non-citizens alike.
McLaughlin pushed back on such claims, emphasizing that Noem is charged with identifying and overseeing dangerous criminals. The agency has made significant strides, with McLaughlin stating they have arrested over 359,000 illegal immigrants and deported more than 332,000.
Ongoing Discourse on Leadership
McLaughlin praised Noem’s leadership, asserting that it cuts taxpayer waste and enhances national security by removing illegal immigrants categorized as terrorists or violent offenders.
She declared, “It’s not gossip, it’s leadership. America will be safer and stronger because of Christie Noem.”
In response, New York Magazine spokesperson Lauren Stark defended their reporting, asserting that the article was responsible and well-sourced, even mentioning interviews with several former and current DHS officials.
