Nick Bosa’s Season Cut Short by Injury
The San Francisco 49ers will be without star defensive end Nick Bosa for the remainder of the 2025 season after he suffered a torn ACL during their recent victory against the Arizona Cardinals.
This injury is significant, requiring surgery at the end of the season. Initial reports suggest that Bosa will face a long recovery, with hopes of returning for the start of the 2026 season, as noted by a recent ESPN update. Interestingly, this isn’t his first encounter with such an injury; he previously tore his ACL while with the New York Jets in the second week of the 2020 season and had a partial tear during his high school years in 2015.
The injury happened late in the first quarter of a closely contested game—San Francisco edged the Cardinals 16-15. Bosa was seen walking to the locker room with about a minute left in that period and didn’t return. Coach Kyle Shanahan mentioned that early sideline tests didn’t confirm a complete tear but acknowledged the potential for serious injuries. “I’m concerned about how he feels,” Shanahan expressed post-game. “They typically run tests, and while nothing was definitive, we need to hope for a good outcome with the MRI.”
Bosa was attempting to rush Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray when he collided with Tackle Kelvin Beachum. As Guard Evan Brown came to assist, Bosa fell awkwardly, and his knees twisted before he hit the ground. Slowly, he made his way to the sidelines, limping with his trainer’s help.
Prior to this setback, the seven-year veteran was having a solid season, with impressive stats including two forced fumbles, two sacks, and four tackles over three games. “It’s really tough losing a player of Nick’s caliber,” said All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams. “When you lose someone like that and his return is uncertain, it’s a genuine blow. It’s a cliché, but you really do need multiple players to fill his role.”
In Bosa’s absence, the 49ers will look to rookies like Michael Williams, Bryce Hough, and some others to step up.
Adding to the team’s challenges, injuries are accumulating on the offensive side as well—tight end George Kittle and quarterback Brock Purdy are dealing with their separate issues, but fortunately, neither is expected to face a season-ending condition like Bosa.
