Secret Service intervenes in 'telecommunications threat' close to UN General Assembly

Secret Service Disrupts Telecommunications Threat Near UN General Assembly

The U.S. Secret Service announced on Tuesday that it has dismantled a network of electronic devices in the New York tristate area. This network reportedly posed various communications-related threats aimed at senior U.S. government officials.

Officials noted that these devices were concentrated within a 35-mile radius of the ongoing UN General Assembly in New York City. The Secret Service stated, “This protection intelligence survey has uncovered over 300 co-located SIM servers and 100,000 SIM cards across several sites.” These devices were believed to have facilitated anonymous threats via phone, and they could enable an array of telecommunications attacks, including disabling mobile phone towers and enabling covert communications between potential threat actors and criminal organizations.

The agency emphasized that the forensic investigation is still underway, but initial findings indicate the presence of cellular communication between foreign threat actors and individuals familiar to federal law enforcement.

Homeland Security Investigations, the Department of Justice, the Director of National Intelligence, the New York Police Department, and other local law enforcement agencies are collaborating in the investigation.

Sean Curran, the director of the Secret Service, remarked on the critical nature of this situation, stating, “The potential for telecommunications disruption in our country created by this network cannot be overstated.”

Emergency Response to Communications Threats

He further explained that the Secret Service’s mission revolves around prevention, highlighting that this investigation serves as a warning to any would-be offenders that threats against the public will be thoroughly investigated and addressed.

The timing and location of these disruptions were crucial, which prompted agents to act swiftly to neutralize this network. Curran also mentioned that the newly formed Advanced Threat Stopper Unit is spearheading this investigation, focusing on imminent threats to public safety.

With significant events like the UN General Assembly underway, authorities remain vigilant in protecting national security interests.
