Discussion on Palestinian Statehood
During a segment on CNN’s “The Lead,” Gregory Meeks, the ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, spoke about the two-state solution. He emphasized that while supporting the establishment of a Palestinian state, simply declaring it is not sufficient. He noted that the real challenge lies in the negotiations required to achieve such a state, mentioning that a Palestinian voice in this process is not essential, distinguishing it from Hamas.
Meeks also highlighted the urgent need to end the conflict in Gaza. He pointed out that the international community is witnessing the tragic humanitarian crisis, where daily casualties include women, children, and men, alongside the destruction of buildings. He expressed concern for the ongoing struggles of the people affected and noted the necessity for negotiations to pave the way forward, rather than mere declarations.
When host Erika Hill inquired whether establishing the perception of a Palestinian state is the initial step in negotiations, Meeks responded by saying that acknowledging the existence of a Palestinian state is crucial. He reiterated the importance of working toward this goal, suggesting that Hamas currently seems to hold power among Palestinians.
