Nebraska Attorney General takes legal action against Lorex regarding privacy concerns over Chinese surveillance cameras.

Nebraska AG Sues Lorex Over Privacy Concerns

Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers initiated a lawsuit against Lorex, a home security camera manufacturer, on Tuesday. He argues that the company has misled consumers regarding the safety and privacy of its devices.

While not widely recognized, Lorex’s cameras are sold at retailers like Costco and Best Buy, and they monitor homes across the U.S.

Concerns of Potential Spying

The 39-page lawsuit, filed in Nebraska court, claims Lorex markets its cameras as “private by design” and suitable for sensitive areas like children’s bedrooms. However, Hilgers points out that their technology is linked to Chinese firms with government ties, raising issues about national security and human rights.

According to Hilgers, the devices depend on Zhejiang Dahua Technology, a Chinese surveillance company that is obliged to assist the Chinese government.

“The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) poses a direct threat to American security,” Hilgers stated. “The situation calls for action in Nebraska against companies that enable this risk.”

Similar Products at Major Retailers

The lawsuit also highlights that Lorex’s dual-lens indoor cameras closely resemble Dahua’s models, which raises further concerns.

Hilgers criticizes Lorex for selling these surveillance cameras for use in private settings without adequately informing families about possible risks. “This deceptive marketing endangers Nebraskan families, especially those with children,” he expressed.

Other voices in the security sector share these worries, with State Armor CEO Michael Lucci asserting that Lorex’s products represent a broader societal threat.

“These products shouldn’t be labeled as ‘made in China’ but rather ‘viewing from China,’” Lucci remarked. He emphasized that Lorex’s lack of transparency about its relationship with the CCP is misleading families across America.

Intensified Scrutiny of China

Lawmakers from both parties have voiced concerns that the Chinese government exploits educational exchanges and business investments within the U.S. as cover for spying activities. These apprehensions have grown in recent years amid heightened scrutiny of China’s influence on American soil.

Hilgers warned that while Lorex promotes its cameras as safe, the reality is that all data is susceptible to Chinese access, presenting a significant threat to individual privacy and national security.
