Portnoy Criticizes Wilbon and Pearl’s Comments

Dave Portnoy took to social media to express his disapproval of ESPN host Mike Wilbon’s remarks about Bruce Pearl, the recently retired Auburn coach. Portnoy called Wilbon’s comment “ridiculous,” stating that Tony Kornheiser shouldn’t have let it slide.

In his tweet, Portnoy suggested that Wilbon seems to favor athletes and coaches who align with his views on social issues, implying that those who don’t are seen as divisive.

Pearl, 65, shocked the college basketball community by retiring just before the 2025-26 season commenced. He’s now transitioning to an ambassador role at the university.

Wilbon had previously critiqued Pearl, suggesting that his recent social media presence resembles that of a politician rather than a coach focused on winning championships. Kornheiser noted that before Wilbon could share his thoughts, Pearl had clarified he wouldn’t pursue a political career.

The conversation took an interesting turn when Kornheiser expressed his longstanding admiration for Pearl, despite acknowledging the differing viewpoints.

Pearl has earned respect for his basketball accomplishments but has faced scrutiny for bending some rules during his career. However, it appears his recent political commentary has led Wilbon to view him in a less flattering light.

Pearl’s social media feeds have increasingly showcased conservative viewpoints, and he has publicly supported Israel and expressed admiration for former President Donald Trump.

Despite speculation about a potential Senate run, Pearl indicated he isn’t ready to take that step just yet. He remarked that many believed he could become Alabama’s next senator, but he chose to accept the role of ambassador instead, staying connected to Auburn.

Throughout his coaching career, Pearl has led teams at Auburn, Tennessee, Milwaukee, and South Indiana, achieving two Final Four appearances, including this past season.
