Democrats Criticize Trump for Cancelling Meeting to Prevent Government Shutdown
On Tuesday, Democratic leaders expressed their discontent with President Trump’s decision to cancel a scheduled meeting aimed at averting a government shutdown next week. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) stated, “Trump is abandoning the negotiation table before he can even get there.” He emphasized that Americans are grappling with increasing costs and a healthcare crisis, criticizing Trump for choosing to cause disruptions instead of engaging in constructive discussions. “Democrats are ready to collaborate to prevent a shutdown. Trump, along with the Republicans, is holding America hostage. He is responsible for this potential closure.”
Schumer also added a somewhat sardonic comment, wishing Trump a “Happy New Year” in light of Rosh Hashanah, suggesting that once he’s done with his outbursts, he should be open to discussing urgent issues like healthcare.
The threat of a government shutdown looms, with no new funding arrangements in place before Wednesday. The Republican-controlled House had passed a resolution funding the government through a three-week period in November, but Senate approval requires at least 60 votes, which currently hinges on Democratic backing.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) expressed disappointment over Trump’s withdrawal from the meeting and pointed fingers at Republicans for possible shutdowns. “Trump always plays it safe,” he remarked, stating that the president canceled an important meeting in the Oval Office that involved both him and Schumer.
Jeffries criticized the extremist elements within the party for stoking a potential government shutdown as a means to avoid confronting the ongoing Republican healthcare crisis affecting the nation.
The three leaders were scheduled to meet with Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) at the White House on Thursday. Initially, Trump had agreed to this meeting after being approached by Schumer and Jeffries. However, he stated on Truth Social that Democrats must meet specific demands for the talks to proceed.
In recent weeks, Johnson and Thune have reportedly resisted engaging in fundraising discussions with the two Democratic leaders, asserting that a proposed funding bill, which they described as a “clean” seven-week suspension, lacked negotiable elements. GOP sources indicated that Johnson and Thune discussed a straightforward ongoing resolution with Trump on Monday night after news of the meeting became public.
Among the items proposed by Democrats is a permanent extension of subsidies under the Affordable Care Act. This has come under scrutiny due to recent GOP initiatives aimed at reducing Medicaid and enacting cuts to retirement benefits.
Republican leaders have classified these proposals as non-starters. Trump’s response included a dismissal of the Democrats’ demands as “radical and ridiculous,” leading him to walk away from discussions. He stated, “I determined that their meetings with Congressional leaders were unproductive.” He called for seriousness in addressing the country’s future and urged for a collaborative legislative approach, emphasizing the importance of keeping the government operational.
