Protests Erupt Near UN Headquarters in Manhattan
On Tuesday, a protest against President Trump turned chaotic outside the UN headquarters in Manhattan, resulting in the arrest of at least 10 demonstrators. The president was addressing the general assembly at the time.
A crowd shouted chants like “There’s no Trump! There’s no Fascist America!” while holding signs that expressed messages like “Refusing Trump” and “Arresting Trump.” Tensions escalated as demonstrators blocked traffic at the intersection of East 46th Avenue and Third Avenue, leading to several arrests by the NYPD.
Among the protesters, one individual wore a red horn and posed next to a large figure resembling Cartman from “South Park,” holding a sign that proclaimed “Trump is Emergency.” As they were handcuffed, many of the arrested continued to shout while being escorted onto NYPD buses and taken to headquarters, according to law enforcement sources.
In addition to the anti-Trump sentiment, various groups converged in the area. Notably, more than a dozen opponents of the Iranian regime were present, advocating for the release of young prisoners sentenced to death in Iran. Signs from the Anti-Ali Khamenei Group highlighted the plight of “15 innocent young people in Iran facing execution.”
Other demonstrators displayed photographs and messages that sought freedom for oppressed individuals. A smaller faction of anti-Israel protesters also gathered near Lexington Avenue as early afternoon rolled in.
Environmental activists from the climate change movement disrupted traffic near a key checkpoint outside the UN conference, asserting their belief that the world deserves better action on sustainability. Organizer Matthew Menzies shared his thoughts, saying, “The UN has been working to tackle climate change for years, but the superpowers seem unable to consistently meet their goals.” He added, “I really don’t know what’s going on there. Maybe one day, I can work there and understand it better.”
