Kenny Chesney Mourns Loss of Friend and Songwriter Brett James

Country music star Kenny Chesney is heartbroken over the tragic loss of his longtime friend Brett James. James, known for his songwriting prowess that contributed to some of country music’s biggest hits, passed away in a devastating crash on September 18. He was 57 years old, and the accident also claimed the lives of his wife and stepdaughter.

Chesney shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, reflecting on the deep creative bond they shared over the years. He wrote, “I say goodbye to the older brother of Sun brother Brett James,” grappling with disbelief at the news. Their collaboration produced numerous popular songs, some of which were famously crafted in just one afternoon. Chesney recalled how they wrote “Reality” together on a December afternoon in the Virgin Islands, capturing the magic of their friendship.

James was not only a key collaborator for Chesney but also wrote hits for other notable artists, including Carrie Underwood and Jason Aldean. “It’s hard to deal with the disappearance of his creative soul,” Chesney expressed, illustrating how deeply connected their careers were. Songs co-written by James frequently filled Chesney’s concert setlists, making it difficult for him to imagine performing without thinking of his friend.

In closing, Chesney offered a poignant farewell. “Adios Brett James,” he wrote. “Thank you for being a life-man, a shirtless, tanned bard, for your friendship, your songs, and all the laughs. Save the afterparty seat!” He ended the tribute with lyrics from his song “Knowing You,” reflecting on the profound impact James had on his life.

James’s recent passing came as a shock to many in the music community. The plane he was piloting crashed in Franklin, North Carolina, and alongside him were his wife, Melody Wilson, and stepdaughter, Meryl Maxwell Wilson, both of whom also lost their lives in the accident. The incident is currently under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.

Brett James leaves behind a legacy as one of Nashville’s most celebrated songwriters, with a career spanning decades. He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2020 and had an extensive catalog of over 500 songs recorded by several prominent artists.
