Luke Donald is aware that NBA icon Michael Jordan will probably represent Team USA at Beth Page this weekend. However, he acknowledges Jordan’s impact on his own life long before this event.
Back in the early 2000s, as Donald neared the end of his college years at Northwestern, he had the opportunity to play golf with Jordan in Chicago. Their friendship has since continued, and they both live nearby in Florida. Watching the “Last Dance” documentary in 2020 provided Donald with insights into Jordan’s philosophy, especially how he demanded the same commitment from himself as he did from his teammates, highlighting the necessity of teamwork.
“You can be a champion team, but you’re not necessarily a championship team,” Donald reflected. “Surrounding yourself with the right people is crucial. It’s something I’ve really tried to instill in my team the last couple of times.”
Despite Jordan’s immediate prominence in the NBA, Donald didn’t fully grasp his significance while growing up in England. That changed after he moved to Chicago, where he quickly realized the extent of Jordan’s influence.
Once Donald wrapped up his stint with the Wildcats, he launched into his professional career. He climbed to the top of the World Golf Rankings in 2011, holding the number one position for 56 weeks, even without a major title. Over the years, he participated in four Ryder Cups as a player and took on the role of vice captain for Team Europe. He later led the team in Rome two years ago, making history as the first captain to lead back-to-back Ryder Cup victories since Bernard Gallacher in the ’90s.
“I’ve been lucky to gain insights from him over the years regarding what drives him and how he maximized his potential,” Donald remarked. “Jordan has a close connection with Keegan [Bradley]. Maybe Keegan drew on MJ’s experience last year.”
“Although he may not offer specific advice this time around, my friendship with him has grown immensely over the years. It’s inspiring to see a legendary figure in his field and get the chance to learn from him,” Donald added.
