Trump compelled to improvise his UN speech after escalator and teleprompter issues: 'Significant problem'

Trump’s Speech at the UN Disrupted by Technical Issues

WASHINGTON – A malfunctioning escalator and a frozen teleprompter created some unexpected challenges for Trump during his speech at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, leading to some improvisation.

As the president was making his way to the podium, the escalator suddenly stalled, forcing him to walk the rest of the way. Once he arrived, Trump noticed that the teleprompter was also out of order.

“I don’t mind giving this speech without a teleprompter, because the teleprompter isn’t working,” he said, somewhat humorously but clearly annoyed.

“Nonetheless, I’m really happy to be here with you all, and you can speak more from the heart. I suppose anyone who operates this teleprompter is having a big issue,” he chuckled further.

After a brief pause, the teleprompter eventually came back online. But the earlier technical glitches seemed to have rattled him.

About ten minutes into his address, Trump, while highlighting his range of domestic and foreign policy accomplishments, returned to the earlier confusion over the equipment.

“Years ago, a very successful real estate developer in New York known as Donald J. Trump – I bid on renovating and rebuilding this highly UN complex,” he reminisced. “I remember that quite well.”

During the early 2000s, Trump advocated for renovations to the UN headquarters in Manhattan. Ultimately, the $2.3 billion project was completed three years later but faced over a $400 million cost overrun, according to the Associated Press.

“At that time, I suggested doing it for around $500 million — the whole rebuilding, everything,” he noted. “It would have been beautiful. I even talked about giving it a marble floor.”

Trump stated that others took a different route, which ended up being much more costly. He felt that the project managers misunderstood construction principles.

“To be honest, they’re still stuck on the escalator, just looking at the building; their work is unfinished,” he remarked, referring back to events from years ago.

Reflecting on the renovation process, Trump mentioned past comments he made to the House of Representatives Oversight Committee in 2005 about the UN project. He remembered the moment the escalator had stopped working while he was on it.

“If the first lady hadn’t been in great shape, she might have collapsed,” he mused.

During his poignant address at the UN, Trump criticized the organization for not addressing ongoing global conflicts, some of which he claimed to have helped mediate.

At one point, he asked, “What is the purpose of the United Nations?” and accused international entities of “financing attacks on the West.”

“All I got from the UN were bad escalators and malfunctioning teleprompters,” he remarked at another point in his speech.

Afterwards, on social media, Trump shared, “Both of these moments made the speech more interesting than it otherwise would have been.”

“It’s always an honor to speak at the UN, even if their equipment is a bit flawed,” he concluded.
