Xi suggests the possibility of a future war between the US and China during Trump meeting

Xi Jinping Raises Concerns of Future US-China Conflict

During a significant meeting with President Trump on Wednesday, Chinese leader Xi Jinping brought up the unsettling possibility of a future conflict between the United States and China.

He referenced the geopolitical theory known as the Thucydides Trap, suggesting that when a rising power challenges an established hegemon, violent confrontation is often a result.

“The whole world is watching our talks,” Xi stated in Beijing’s Great Hall of the People, with Trump present at the table across from him.

He continued, “Currently, changes not seen in a century are accelerating globally, and the international landscape is both fluid and turbulent.” He noted that “the world is at a new crossroads.”

Xi posed critical questions: “Can China and the United States navigate the Thucydides Trap and forge a new framework for great power dynamics? Can we collaboratively tackle global challenges and bring more stability? Can we together build a brighter future for our bilateral relationship for the welfare of our people and the future of humanity?”

He characterized the issues confronting both nations as “problems of great historical importance” for the world and its citizens.

“These are the questions of our time, and as leaders of major nations, we need to address them,” he emphasized.

Interestingly, some experts interpreted Xi’s remarks differently. For instance, Sky News Asia correspondent Helen-Anne Smith suggested that Xi was implying a way to transcend the Thucydides Trap, indicating that his message was about China’s emergence not being something to fear.

Trump, in his remarks following Xi, didn’t directly address those statements but expressed optimism, stating that “the relationship between China and the United States will be better than ever.”
