Girl Rescued in Chicago After Disappearance from New York
A 13-year-old girl from upstate New York was located in an apartment in suburban Chicago after allegedly being lured by illegal immigrants.
The girl, whose identity hasn’t been disclosed, was found in a Blue Island complex in Illinois by U.S. authorities following a tip about her whereabouts. She had been missing from her home in Rochester since September 11.
According to the U.S. authorities, a father and his 18-year-old son were in the apartment with her at the time of the discovery.
Surveillance footage showed the girl leaving her house and encountering three adult men nearby.
The suspect is believed to have used social media to lure her, Charles Salina, a former U.S. attorney for New York’s Western District, mentioned in a report.
“They were exploiting her in Chicago,” he stated, although more details were not provided.
Blue Island is situated about 20 miles south of downtown Chicago.
It seems the suspect had made contact with her close to her home, and she got into their lightly colored SUV before they headed to the apartment.
Authorities thought the girl might be in danger, which accelerated her search.
Salina emphasized, “We dropped everything and made this case our top priority,” indicating the urgency of the situation.
As the investigation progressed, concerns grew regarding her safety, and it was determined that she was indeed in a hazardous environment.
Authorities received valuable leads from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, aiding in their rescue efforts.
An official stated that local authorities coordinated with the NCMEC to gather information indicating that the girl had traveled to the Chicago area.
On September 21, federal agents approached the Blue Island apartment where they spotted the two men and the missing girl.
Salina remarked, “Our agency worked relentlessly to rescue this endangered child from predators who should never have taken her.” He added that every child deserves to grow up safely.
Another girl was also discovered with her and is believed to have been influenced by the 18-year-old suspect.
The father-son duo was apprehended for being in the country illegally, although no charges had been filed as of Tuesday afternoon.
Salina expressed the satisfaction of being able to inform the girl’s family that she was safe, describing it as a highly rewarding experience for law enforcement.
