Chicago Update on Tyler Megill
Tyler Megill won’t be pitching in the Major Leagues again until 2027. That’s a long break.
Coach Carlos Mendoza announced that Megill is set to undergo Tommy John surgery on Monday and will focus on rehab throughout the next season.
During the current season, Megill made 14 starts for the Mets, maintaining a 3.95 ERA before landing on the injured list in June. Recently, discomfort halted his rehabilitation efforts.
This season, he joins other players, like Frankie Montas and Griffin Canning, also facing Tommy John surgery.
Adding to the injury list, it seems Reed Garrett might need the same procedure after dealing with elbow inflammation recently.
For most of the last five years, Megill has been a valuable depth piece for the Mets. “I really miss him, especially when we talk about our depth,” Mendoza shared prior to the Mets’ 9-7 win against the Cubs. “Our priority is to get him back on the field as quickly as we can.”
Tyrone Taylor’s Status
Meanwhile, Tyrone Taylor is working hard to return from the injured list. He is set to undergo a full workout before Wednesday’s game after playing two minor league rehab games to recover from a strained left hamstring that kept him out for three weeks.
Kodai Senga’s Progress
Over in Port St. Lucie, Florida, Kodai Senga faced batters in live batting practice, tossing around 45 pitches. Mendoza mentioned he hadn’t yet reviewed Senga’s previous outings or consulted with any right-handed players about it.
Senga, who was called up to the minors on September 5th, has made two starts for Syracuse as the Mets assess his potential role if they reach the postseason.
Recent Lineup Changes
In a recent game, Sterling Marte started in left field, and Brandon Nimmo took center, allowing the Mets to add an extra bat without shifting Jeff McNeil from second base.
It’s been a challenging year for Cedric Mullins and Jose Ciri, who are both struggling to secure the center field position. This marked Nimmo’s first start in center this season, while Marte has made his eighth outfield start, focusing on keeping his right knee healthy.
Mendoza commented on Marte feeling almost 100% with his knees, which has influenced their lineup decisions. “We’ve been cautious with him for a while, but now it’s essential that he plays, especially against left-handed pitchers,” he explained.
