Vivek Ramaswamy says the US might have been 'in decline' for the last 50 years: 'It doesn't have to remain like this'

Ramaswamy’s Vision for Ohio Education and Economy

In a recent episode of a podcast, Vivek Ramaswamy, the hopeful candidate for Ohio’s governorship, shared his thoughts on the current state of the nation. He emphasized that while the U.S. might seem to have seen a decline recently—perhaps over several decades—it doesn’t have to stay that way.

“We can still aspire to be a rising nation, but we need to confront our failures head-on,” Ramaswamy explained. He pointed to the education system as one of the primary failures needing attention.

Ramaswamy, who is just 40, has shifted focus from a prominent theme of America’s decline, which he initially discussed during his 2024 campaign. He had made waves in December 2024 by criticizing what he saw as a culture that favors mediocrity over excellence.

Saying it’s a moral duty to prepare children for the modern economy, he questioned if we, as a nation, are prioritizing this adequately—his answer was a clear “no.”

“There are significant issues with how public schools are currently run,” he remarked. Although many Republicans advocate for school choice, Ramaswamy believes in elevating performance standards for public education, particularly in mathematics.

He argues that existing licensure requirements for teachers are often too costly and detrimental, saying they exclude qualified candidates, particularly in math. “We’re not even evaluating teachers effectively against current standards,” he noted.

The native of Cincinnati expressed a desire to address the decline of Ohio’s industries over the past few decades, linking this issue back to the education system.

Ramaswamy highlighted Ohio’s historical role in the industrial revolution, stating, “We were once leaders in innovation but have fallen behind places like Silicon Valley.” He wants to revitalize the state by embracing both traditional and emerging industries over the next decade.

Currently, Ramaswamy is leading in the Republican nomination race as he aims for the governorship of Ohio.
