Roseanne Barr Speaks Out on Jimmy Kimmel’s Suspension
Roseanne Barr, the 72-year-old comedian, has voiced her thoughts on the recent temporary suspension of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” calling out Disney-owned networks. This comes after a deal of backlash surrounding Kimmel’s comments on a tragic event involving Charlie Kirk.
In her remarks, Barr compared Kimmel’s situation to the cancellation of her own sitcom reboot, “Roseanne,” back in 2018, which was axed following her controversial tweet regarding Valerie Jarrett, a former advisor to Barack Obama.
In an interview, Barr stated, “I ruined my whole life, and everything in my work was stolen from me after they called me a racist,” indicating the double standards she perceives in the media’s treatment of different personalities.
She speculated on Kimmel’s return to air, suggesting it would be a celebration for his supporters. “They feel like they’ve won another battle with Trump,” Barr remarked, hinting at a sense of satisfaction among Kimmel’s fans about his comeback.
ABC had revived Barr’s sitcom in 2018, but after her offensive remarks, she was quickly fired. Her show had been performing well, yet the network deemed her comments unacceptable, leading to the show’s cancellation and the development of a spinoff titled “The Conners,” which erased her character from the narrative.
After the fallout, Barr expressed feeling “erased” from history, particularly from discussions around female pioneers in media.
Recently, Kimmel returned to the air after extensive criticism regarding his comments about the assassination incident involving Charlie Kirk. On September 15, during his monologue, he addressed the backlash, acknowledging that his remarks may have upset some viewers, while still delivering jabs at political figures like President Trump.
It’s clear the present entertainment landscape is fraught with controversy and differing standards. Barr’s experiences serve as a lens through which we might examine the tumultuous intersections of humor, media, and accountability.
