Democrats Respond to ANTIFA Designation
Democrats are putting considerable effort into asserting that ANTIFA is not a real organization. This comes in the wake of the Trump administration’s decision to broadly label various left and right groups as terrorist organizations, citing links to violence and riots in U.S. cities.
The White House stated that the order mandates a federal investigation into any illegal activities associated with ANTIFA, aiming to also uncover the funding sources for such operations. It emphasizes the necessity to confront movements that seek to disrupt the U.S. government.
Some lawmakers have openly questioned the existence of ANTIFA’s membership. Congressman Daniel Goldman from New York echoed this skepticism, asking, “Can anyone name a member of ANTIFA?” He expressed concern that the Trump administration was misusing the label of “domestic terrorists” to silence dissent. He cautioned against being misled by what he labeled as lawless actions.
Representative Eric Swalwell also weighed in, challenging the president directly, humorously inquiring if ANTIFA members were present in the room with him.
This isn’t the first instance where Democrats have disputed the existence of ANTIFA. In 2020, during widespread protests, Representative Jerry Nadler referred to the group as a “myth,” dismissing it altogether.
During a Homeland Security Committee meeting earlier this year, Goldman mentioned that ANTIFA is more about an ideology than a structured organization, reflecting sentiments shared by the FBI’s former director, Christopher Wray.
It’s noteworthy that ANTIFA’s organization is dispersed intentionally, which complicates efforts for local authorities to dismantle any existing networks. For instance, a specific ANTIFA group in San Diego was successfully disbanded last year after local prosecutors achieved criminal convictions against members involved in violent altercations with Trump supporters in 2021.
This summer, some ANTIFA members were reported to have engaged in violent protests against ICE facilities in Portland, Oregon, indicating ongoing tensions. Previously, they had coordinated protests targeting federal courts in downtown Portland during 2020.
