Alleged assassin of Charlie Kirk placed in special housing after mental assessment

The suspect reportedly indicated that the Utah County Sheriff’s Office accused Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, of being housed in the prison’s “special housing unit,” even after completing a mental health evaluation.

Kirk was critically injured in a shooting at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah, on September 10 and later succumbed to his injuries. Tyler Robinson has been charged with aggravated murder, along with two counts of obstruction of justice and a felony related to serious bodily harm caused by a firearm.

Sergeant Ray Ormond from the Utah County Sheriff’s Office mentioned to Fox News Digital that although Robinson received medical and psychological evaluations at the prison, he would continue to stay in the special housing unit for now.

Ormond stated, “Robinson has been evaluated by the medical and mental health staff. Unfortunately, I can’t share specifics due to privacy laws. He will remain in our special housing unit for the time being.” When questioned about the possibility of Robinson staying in the unit indefinitely, Ormond added, “It’s not set in stone, and the location could change depending on various factors.”

Authorities had previously claimed that Robinson had a special status within the Utah County Sheriff’s Special Housing Unit to monitor him closely until he passes a mental health evaluation.

This particular “special clock” status is implemented for various reasons, including violent behavior, the nature of the crime, suicidal comments, and other behavioral concerns, according to the department.

Earlier, the department also stated that they were unaware of any suicidal comments made by Robinson.

In a recent proceeding, Tyler Robinson appeared via a video feed from court. Furthermore, former federal prosecutor Neema Ramani remarked that mental health evaluations usually indicate that certain individuals shouldn’t be mixed with the general population, underscoring Robinson’s continued placement in the “special housing unit.”

Ramani noted, “A comprehensive mental health assessment is currently being conducted by his defense team. This is part of the negotiations for a plea deal aimed at preserving his life and possibly reducing insanity and capability defenses during the guilt phase, which can be vital under Utah law.”
