Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent has put forward a plan to attract investments in Argentina from several major companies in the United States.
In a social media post on Wednesday, Bescent shared some of the measures the U.S. is undertaking to bolster Argentina’s economy and financial sector. These include an undisclosed amount of liability, a commitment to buy Argentine U.S. Treasury, as well as initiating a currency swap line.
During the recent UN General Assembly, Secretary Bescent and President Trump met with Argentine President Javier Milei, working together to assist Argentina through its financial difficulties. The administration is considering substantial financial aid for Argentina.
“Argentina has tools at its disposal to combat speculators, those aiming to destabilize its markets for political gain,” Bescent noted, referring to traders looking to profit from the fluctuations in the Argentine currency.
However, Bescent indicated that private sector involvement in Argentina might hinge on whether Milei’s party secures more legislative power in the upcoming October 26 elections.
“I’ve been in contact with various U.S. companies ready to invest significantly, across multiple sectors in Argentina, provided the election yields favorable outcomes,” he mentioned.
With Trump in office since 2024, he has found common ground with Milei, a libertarian economist who holds socially conservative views.
Milei has become quite a symbol during his campaign, even using a chainsaw as a prop at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) near Washington, D.C., alongside Elon Musk, who’s been pivotal in Trump’s budgetary strategies this year.
While experts assert that Milei has vowed to tackle the rampant inflation caused by excessive government spending through bold cuts and reforms, some of his proposed measures remain unfulfilled.
His party has already faced challenges, experiencing a steady decline in support amid recent regional elections. The lingering financial crisis appears to threaten his party’s stability.
