Democrat Willing to Address Trans Issues Faces Primary Challenge from Bearded Woman

Massachusetts Congressman Faces Unique Challenge

Massachusetts Democrat Seth Moulton is in the spotlight, perhaps not as brightly as he could be, but still significant. He’s being challenged by Bethany Andresbeck, a transgender man who has openly spoken on behalf of transgender activists. This is quite notable, as Moulton is among the rare moderates in his party.

Moulton, a Harvard alum and a Bronze Star recipient from his service in Iraq, is navigating his own substantial trials as he contemplates a run against established left-leaning Senator Ed Markey. Just recently, he faced serious threats, marking a shift in his political environment since 2020.

Andresbeck stated in July that a key element of her decision to run was that lawmakers like Moulton were too preoccupied with issues she views as “wedge problems,” such as the participation of biological boys in women’s sports. Instead, she argues, they should focus on pressing matters like the affordability of education and the cost of living in America.

“It’s obvious he’s not engaging with trans people directly,” she expressed. “It’s frustrating to see how disconnected he seems. Democrats need to step up and address these issues authentically; otherwise, the party risks losing its relevance.” After Kamala Harris lost in the 2024 elections, Moulton was among the first to suggest that the Democratic stance on transgender matters could alienate voters.

He pointed out, “I have two little girls. I don’t want them competing with men or former male athletes.” He candidly admitted to the New York Times that expressing such thoughts as a Democrat is daunting.

In the weeks following his remarks, Moulton faced considerable backlash from the left, to the point where protesters visited his office. Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey criticized him for “playing politics.” Others, like Liz Brad, the head of the Salem Democratic City Commission, even labeled Moulton with far-reaching accusations, threatening to find a challenger to run against him.

Now, it seems she has found that very challenger in Andresbeck.

Moulton has long been a somewhat contentious figure within the Democratic Party, having entered Congress in 2015 by unseating incumbent Democrat John F. Tierney. He gained support from notable figures like Nancy Pelosi and Elizabeth Warren. In 2018, he even led efforts to disrupt the party’s traditional leadership structure, aiming to prevent Pelosi from reclaiming the House Speaker position.

This potential primary fight against Ed Markey, who successfully fended off a challenge from Joe Kennedy in 2020, could signal a crucial moment for the direction of the Democratic Party. Observers might find both this race and Moulton’s decision—whether to pursue a Senate seat or seek reelection in the House—offering contrasting visions for the party’s future. One represents a centrist to conservative approach, while the other leans into a left-wing agenda.

In the end, it’ll be interesting to see how this unfolds. I’m leaning towards the latter vision gaining more traction.
