Sister Jean Retires from Official Duties at Loyola Chicago
Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt, the beloved figure in Loyola Chicago’s basketball community, has officially announced her retirement due to health concerns. She celebrated her 106th birthday just weeks ago and had been serving as the team’s pastor since 1994. Her contributions to college basketball over the years have been noteworthy, making her a cherished presence in the community.
Christian Anderson, the Vice President of Communications, confirmed her retirement, but didn’t delve into the specifics of her health issues. “Sister Jean has stepped back from her official responsibilities,” he stated. “We respect her privacy and will not comment beyond what she’s shared.” Earlier, in getting in touch with the student body, Sister Jean expressed her regret about not being able to celebrate birthdays on campus due to ongoing health challenges.
Having served the Loyola Ramblers for three decades, Sister Jean gained national attention during the team’s unexpected run to the Final Four in 2018. While she still made appearances—like attending a game in 2023 at the age of 103—her recent health setbacks necessitated this decision to retire from her official capacity.
As she steps back, it’s clear the impact she’s made won’t be forgotten. Sister Jean’s legacy will continue to inspire many who have come in contact with her throughout her extraordinary life.
