During the 2025 Ryder Cup on Long Island, New York Governor Kathy Hochul faced significant boos from the crowd. Even a lighthearted attempt by talk show host Carson Daly to address the situation didn’t seem to ease the tension.
As Hochul made her way across the stage at Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, golf fans voiced their displeasure at the opening ceremony leading up to the USA’s match against Europe. Social media footage captured some of the negative reactions.
One attendee was particularly vocal, shouting, “You’re the worst.”
Daly tried to lighten the mood with a joke, mentioning NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, but that only fell flat. According to reports, Hochul prompted a round of applause for Team USA, briefly drowning out the jeers aimed at her.
As she stepped off stage, Daly remarked, “It worked.” Yet, the crowd’s frustration lingered. Other speakers, including U.S. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley, notably didn’t escape the boos either, with fans continuing to express their discontent.
“Go out here and leave Kathy,” yelled another fan.
Representative Elise Stefanik from upstate New York is keeping a close watch on Hochul’s political challenges ahead, noting that her time in office has been difficult. A tweet from the Republican Party declared, “Fire Hochul. Save New York.”
In response to the commotion, Hochul’s office downplayed the negative reception. A spokesperson for the governor expressed pride in bringing major golf events to New York in the upcoming years and emphasized the commitment to providing a world-class experience for visitors to Bethpage State Park.
It’s worth mentioning that Long Island has leaned more Republican in recent elections, which might have contributed to the crowd’s reaction.
