Violet Affleck Advocates for Clean Air at the UN

Violet Affleck recently took the stage at the United Nations, calling for cleaner air, while her father, Ben Affleck, continues to grapple with his smoking habits.

Dressed in a KN95 mask, the 19-year-old Yale student participated in the “Healthy Indoor Air: Global Call for Action” panel in New York on Tuesday.

During a four-minute speech, Violet urged government officials to restore the mask mandate, invest in clean air initiatives, and treat “filtered air as a human right, just like clean water.” She emphasized that it’s crucial to establish a clean air infrastructure so that future generations won’t even question its necessity.

“We can create an environment where clean air is a standard,” she remarked, addressing the representatives.

However, an expert connected to Violet’s father indicated that Ben’s smoking habits could challenge her efforts for cleaner air.

“Violet is particularly sensitive about air quality,” noted Rocky Rosen, a smoking cessation trainer in Los Angeles. “She desires clean air, but she’s also worried about her father’s health. It leaves her feeling quite helpless when he smokes.”

Violet is the eldest daughter of actress Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck, both 53. The couple shares two other children, Seraphina, 15, and Samuel, 12, and divorced in 2018 after over a decade together.

Despite Violet’s advocacy for healthier air, Ben has struggled with nicotine addiction for years. He’s been spotted smoking publicly, sometimes even removing his mask during the pandemic to do so.

“People like Ben are often caught in a cycle of fear—of not being able to quit and, at the same time, of what that means for them,” Rosen explained. “He’s concerned about the environment, yet smoking seems to control him.”

Rosen also mentioned that Ben is mindful when it comes to Violet’s presence, as he doesn’t smoke near her and is aware of the impact of secondhand smoke.
