CLEVELAND – George Valera connected for a two-run homer in the third inning, while Jose Ramirez contributed a two-run double in the seventh, helping the Cleveland Guardians rally from a 15.5 game deficit to claim the lead in their division, making history as the first major league team to defeat the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night.
Cleveland (86-72) is now one game ahead of Detroit (85-73) and has a critical four-game series lined up. They also hold the tiebreaker by winning the season series against the Tigers.
The last time a team overcame such a significant deficit was the 1914 Boston Braves, who reduced a 10.5 game gap in just 15 games. Additionally, since the advent of division play in 1969, the most substantial comeback remains the 14-game turnaround by the New York Yankees in 1978.
Tanner Bibee (12-11) notched his third consecutive win, only conceding one run over six innings. His performance has been impressive, as the Guardians’ starters have now held opponents to fewer than two runs in 19 games, reminiscent of the strong showing by the 2019 Tampa Bay Rays.
Detroit has now lost eight straight games, going from being in first place to trailing the Guardians, who have recently taken the lead for the first time since April 22. The loss was attributed to Jack Flaherty (8-15), who struggled on the mound.
The Tigers initially took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Parker Meadows’ sacrifice fly brought home Dillon Dingler.
Brayan Rocchio sparked a response for Cleveland, leading off the third with a double. Valera followed this up with a hit that made it to the center field wall, allowing Rocchio to score after the ball deflected off a glove.
Important moments
Ramirez’s pivotal moment came in the eighth inning with a two-run double that bounced off the glove of a Detroit infielder.
Key Statistics
Ramirez made history by becoming the second player in the Cleveland franchise to reach a total of 3,000 bases, joining Earl Aberyl, who achieved the feat from 1929 to 1941.
