Zelensky’s Warning at UN: The Need for Action Against Russia

In a speech to the United Nations General Assembly, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed grave concerns over the reliance on “friends and weapons” rather than international law to defend against war and tyranny. He highlighted that Ukraine has consistently called for stronger support from the world, especially in light of Russia’s aggressive actions over the past three and a half years. Zelensky underscored that Ukraine might be the first European nation affected by Moscow’s ambitions, but it certainly won’t be the last.

“Putin will keep escalating this war,” Zelensky stated, mentioning that Russian drones are now operating across Europe. He emphasized that Russia’s influence is spreading, and Putin’s intent appears to be continuing the conflict by broadening its scope.

He added, “Now no one can feel safe.” Many leaders at the UN echoed this sentiment, expressing dissatisfaction with the current state of international law and human rights in the face of rising security threats and geopolitical tensions.

Zelensky remarked on the ongoing arms race and the necessity of creating underground bunkers in urban areas, indicating that “it’s cheaper to stop Putin than to try to protect every port from terrorist threats posed by sea drones.” He warned, “We need to stop Russia before it’s too late, rather than later worrying about who might develop a drone with nuclear capabilities.”

He also touched upon broader global issues, like the plight of Israeli hostages in Gaza and the conditions Palestinians face. “What hope do nations in turmoil, like those in Sudan and Somalia, have in relying on the UN or the international system? It often seems like just statements without real action,” he commented.

In his conclusion, Zelensky called for a unified stance against Russian aggression. “Ultimately, peace rests on us in the United Nations. While Russia continues its assault, it’s vital to speak out and condemn these actions,” he urged. “Please join in safeguarding lives and upholding international law. The world is waiting for us to act.”
