Three Arrested After Shooting at Youth Baseball Event in Texas
Three individuals are facing charges following a shooting incident that injured a young baseball coach in Houston. The shooting occurred during a pre-game prayer with a player on Sunday.
The Waller County Sheriff’s Office reported that 23-year-old Mahmoud Abdelsalam Rababa, along with two other suspects aged 21 and 27, has been charged with felony conduct. All three are being held on $100,000 bail.
Chaos erupted at the Americapark Youth Baseball Field in Katy when the suspects reportedly fired weapons from a nearby meadow towards the field, where a youth baseball game was taking place.
Footage shows a 12-year-old player from the Texas Colts in a light blue jersey running for safety as shots rang out, with one adult appearing to have been struck and collapsing near home plate.
The victim, a baseball coach according to the owner of the RAC Katie, was hit in the shoulder due to what was described as “recreational shooting on nearby property.” After receiving treatment at the baseball field, he was later transported to a hospital and was released the same day.
The coach’s first reaction was to protect the children, as noted by Andy Bayes, founder of the Houston Warriors. “He literally took a bullet for the child to his left. Thankfully, we avoided a major disaster,” Bayes expressed while emphasizing the emotional weight of the incident.
A mother who wished to remain anonymous shared her concerns about safety in the aftermath. “We’re not going back to Rac Katy. After talking with all the parents and our boys, the overwhelming response was the same: none of us want to return,” she commented.
Following the arrests, the RAC issued a statement indicating that enhanced security measures would be implemented during future events. “In addition to local law enforcement efforts, we implemented additional security measures over the weekend for all tournaments,” the statement clarified. “We prioritize the safety and security of our players, coaches, and families.”
