Van Jones Warns Against Attacking Comey
During a conversation on CNN with Erin Burnett, political analyst Van Jones shared his thoughts on the Democratic Party’s views regarding former FBI director James Comey, suggesting that pursuing him might inadvertently harm the Trump administration.
Jones drew an analogy to the recent return of late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, who experienced a surge in ratings after a temporary absence. This return followed controversial remarks made by Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Kerr, who criticized Kimmel after comments related to the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
“What I’ve noticed with Jimmy Kimmel is a growing defense of the system,” Jones remarked.
He expressed his disdain for Comey, noting that many Democrats share similar feelings. “We were the ones who tripped up Hillary Clinton in 2016 right when he intervened,” he added.
Jones criticized the notion of digging through past statements from 2020, calling it “utterly ridiculous” and likening such actions to the behavior seen in a ‘banana republic’ where political opponents are relentlessly pursued.
Recent reports suggest that the Department of Justice is considering an indictment against Comey for allegedly lying to Congress nearly five years ago, coinciding with the expiration of certain legal restrictions.
Since his dismissal as FBI director under Trump, Comey has been vocal in his criticisms of the administration. His involvement in investigating potential Russian interference in the 2016 election and his controversial handling of Hillary Clinton’s email server have drawn significant attention. Notably, he informed Congress about newly discovered emails just days before the election, which many Democrats believe contributed to Clinton’s loss.
Jones opined that Trump’s aggressive stance toward Comey might backfire, pointing out that Trump’s public call for Comey’s imprisonment raises concerns about selective prosecution.
“It seems that Trump has stumbled over this incident, especially with his comments about Kimmel,” Jones concluded.
