Coach Injured in Shooting During Texas Baseball Tournament
A coach was reportedly shot in the shoulder during a team prayer at the boys’ Texas Baseball Tournament on Sunday. Footage indicates that at least 12 shots were fired, causing players, parents, and coaches to flee the area.
The injured coach, who was leading the 10-year-old Houston Warriors, was shot while praying before the game and subsequently airlifted to a hospital. “When he was hit, his first instinct was to drop to the ground and shield his child, then get to a safer spot,” team founder Andy Bayes shared.
He added, “His immediate concern upon waking was that he had to make it back in time to coach his child at 3 PM.”
Three suspects have been arrested and charged in relation to the shooting incident at Amelie Park.
Authorities reported that three suspects fired firearms from a nearby pasture. Mahmoud Abdelsalam, 23, Ahmad Maud, 21, and Mustafa Mohamad Matarga, 27, face charges related to reckless conduct and firearm discharge. Each was assigned a bail of $100,000.
One young witness remarked, “It’s tough for me to talk about it. Their faces will always stick with me,” indicating the emotional impact this event had on those present. Meanwhile, Alex Smith, director of the Texas Colts, expressed similar sentiments regarding the trauma experienced.
The owner of the baseball stadium issued a statement acknowledging the events and mentioned that local law enforcement would be enhancing security measures for future tournaments. “We are thankful for the support from the baseball community, and we will keep those affected in our thoughts and prayers,” the statement concluded.
The facility plans to reopen by Monday, with assurances that safety measures are now a priority following the incident. Reports suggest the shooting may have been linked to recreational activities that had raised concerns of illegal hunting in the vicinity.
