New Covid-19 Variant Raises Concerns

As Covid-19 continues to change, new variants are emerging globally. The World Health Organization has noted the rise of the XFG variant, or Stratus, which was first identified in Southeast Asia back in January.

By June, Stratus had spread to 38 countries, leading the WHO to classify it as a “surveillance SATS-COV-2 variant.”

Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports increases in coronavirus cases across nine states, including New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Michigan, and Wisconsin, among others.

According to CDC wastewater data, XFG has become the predominant variant in the U.S., particularly noted in data from the week of September 15th. Stony Brook Medicine has indicated that Stratus variants are highly contagious and follow the Nimbus strain, which is linked with severe pain symptoms.

Stratus has mutated in ways that allow it to evade immune responses, making it potentially more challenging to combat, especially for those who are unvaccinated or have never been infected with the virus.

Symptoms and Recommendations

The new variants mainly exhibit typical Covid-19 symptoms, though most cases are mild for those who have received vaccinations. Common symptoms include fatigue, fever, and a persistent dry cough.

Additional symptoms associated with Stratus might include shortness of breath, chest pain, headaches, and gastrointestinal issues like nausea. If someone experiences these, especially with a high fever lasting over three days, seeking medical advice is crucial.

Experts recommend that high-risk individuals keep their vaccinations current to mitigate the severity of Covid-19. It’s important to be proactive; wearing masks in crowded indoor spaces, ensuring good ventilation, and frequently washing hands can help lower transmission risks.
