New York City Teacher Arrested for Child Pornography Charges

A first-year teacher in New York City has been arrested for allegedly replenishing a “sick” collection of child pornography. Federal prosecutors claim that his own family involvement revealed some disturbing behavior.

Christopher Ward, 37, reportedly used a messaging app to distribute hundreds of graphic photos and videos for over a year while teaching young students in Queens public elementary schools.

“Every day, Christopher Ward stood in front of a first-grade classroom, allegedly keeping hundreds of images of children abusing as they did,” stated Manhattan U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton.

Ward had previously been under investigation for child exploitation. According to the criminal charges, a relative recorded a conversation in early September where Ward admitted to sharing a child pornographic video, a claim he reportedly made at least 30 times.

Court documents indicate that a family member acted “independently” in sharing the material and wasn’t directed to do so by authorities. Ward also provided a relative’s phone to law enforcement, according to the complaint.

The complaint detailed how the messaging words he used to share the child pornography were allegedly removed from the device, indicating an attempt to conceal his actions.

Ward taught at Queens Elementary School from September last year until this month, though the specific school’s name hasn’t been disclosed. Prior to this, he worked at a Manhattan school from January 2021 to June 2024.

Living with his parents in Farmingdale after separating from his spouse, Ward’s attorney said in court on Wednesday that he is presumed innocent as the charges are merely that—charges.

“Yesterday, Ward was arrested and entered a plea of innocence. The charges included are simply allegations at this point,” defense attorney Daniel Russo noted in a statement.

Ward is currently being held without bail, awaiting his next court date on October 2nd. He faces one count each of receiving and distributing child pornography, along with one count for possessing images involving minors under 12 years old.

Each charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years imprisonment. The city’s Department of Education has yet to comment on Ward’s arrest.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tish expressed deep concern, stating, “When we send our kids to school every day, we expect them to be cared for and protected by teachers. Christopher Ward has turned every parent’s worst nightmare into a reality. These allegations are not only disgusting but illegal, and there’s zero tolerance for those who exploit our most innocent.”
