Investigation into Former Federal Prosecutor’s Actions
In Washington, a former federal prosecutor in Florida has been indicted for allegedly sending an investigative report concerning President Trump’s handling of classified documents to her personal email, which goes against a judge’s directive to keep such documents sealed. This was revealed in an indictment released on Wednesday.
Carmen Lineberger, previously affiliated with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida, where she oversaw the Fort Pierce office, faces multiple charges including theft of government property and concealment of government records. During her court appearance in West Palm Beach, she entered a plea of not guilty.
Her attorney has not yet commented publicly on the case.
Prosecutors assert that while serving as a prosecutor last year, Lineberger emailed herself a copy of a report focused on a special counsel’s investigation regarding the classified documents stored at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach. Interestingly, it’s noted that she even changed the filename to “Bundt_Cake_Recipe.pdf” before saving it on a government computer and emailing it to her personal account.
The indictment does not clarify why she chose to send the report to her personal email, which she could access through her role as a prosecutor.
This report outlines findings linked to a criminal case that had previously been perceived as a significant legal challenge for Trump but has not been released to the public. U.S. District Judge Eileen Cannon supported the argument presented by Trump’s lawyers that disclosing the report would unduly bias the public since the special counsel dropped the case following Trump’s win in the 2024 election.
Lineberger’s previous professional ties to the same judicial district where the lawsuit was filed against Trump add another layer of complexity to the situation. The lawsuit itself claims that Trump unlawfully stored a number of classified records from his presidency at his Florida residence and impeded government efforts to retrieve these documents.
