Comey Indicted by Federal Judge Amid Trump’s Call for Action

A federal judge has indicted former FBI Director James Comey, giving the green light to charges following President Trump’s recent public call for action against him.

Comey faces accusations of making a false statement, along with another charge related to his disability status.

“No one is above the law. Today’s indictment shows the Justice Department’s commitment to holding accountable those who misuse their power to mislead the American public. We will pursue the facts in this matter,” a spokesperson expressed on social media.

Trump targeted Comey on a social media platform over the weekend, urging Attorney General Pam Bondi for the indictment, positioning Comey among his perceived political adversaries.

Reports suggest that there may be insufficient evidence to pursue mortgage fraud claims linked to Comey. This surfaced after Eric Sabert, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, resigned rather than move forward with charges against New York Attorney General Letitia James.

Sabert had been overseeing the Comey situation, which has now been passed to Lindsay Harrigan. Harrigan, a White House staff member with a background in insurance law, was appointed as a temporary replacement but hasn’t handled federal lawsuits before.

Trump has openly sought to press charges against Comey, who has previously denied any wrongdoing regarding investigations into his campaign’s connections with Russia during the 2016 election, which he has termed a “witch hunt.”

The scrutiny on Comey arises from his Congressional testimony on September 30, 2020. This indictment comes just days ahead of a five-year statute of limitations regarding such claims.

In that hearing, Comey was questioned about whether he had authorized a leak related to the investigation into Trump.

Initially, Comey served under Trump but was dismissed from his role in 2019. Since then, he has been vocal in his criticism of the former president, even sharing a photo in May that cleverly spelled out “8647” in beach shells, an apparent jab at the administration.

In a further twist, the Department of Justice has also terminated Comey’s daughter, Mohren, a respected prosecutor in New York. She has indicated through legal actions that her dismissal was at least partly due to her father’s political situation.
